Bluegrass and beyond: DelFest celebrates 10th year

In the festival world of Coachellas and Bonnaroos, the annual DelFest event in Cumberland, Maryland, might not be as well known, but it's certainly beloved. The four-day event happening from May 25-28 is celebrating its 10th year.

DelFest is named for Del McCoury, a living legend in bluegrass music best known for perfecting that "high lonesome" sound. However, a quick peek at the festival lineup and you realize, this isn't a bluegrass festival as much as it is an event that celebrates authentic, acoustic music.

Del and his band play each night at the Allegany County Fairgrounds during DelFest, and it's a family affair. McCoury's sons Ronnie and Rob are part of the group, and along with Alam Bartram and Jason Carter, they make up one of the most beloved bands in the history of bluegrass.

Other bluegrass or Americana acts scheduled to appear at this year's DelFest include Railroad Earth, Leftover Salmon, Hot Rize, The Infamous Stringdusters and the Steep Canyon Rangers, who are best known for their collaborations with actor and banjoist Steve Martin.

Speaking of banjo, virtuoso banjoist Bela Fleck will also be at this year's DelFest.

However, DelFest 2017 isn't just about bluegrass. Gov't Mule will play as will Trey Anastasio and his band. Dierks Bentley will make an appearance as will Marty Stuart of "Hillbilly Rock" fame. And Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys will join the McCourys to kick off the festival May 25.
