Our favorite Halloween candies of all time

Let's start with 'She Said' ...

The Halloween candy debate has been years in the making among family members, classmates and friends. Good news, though. We’ve built a dueling Top 5 candy list. Even better news. All of these tasty Halloween candies are found at Love’s locations coast to coast.

5. Sour Patch Kids. These candies pack the punch, and then, follow up the perfect sweetness you’re looking for. Ideally, find a friend who will trade you the orange ones for the magnificent red ones.

4. Skittles. A strong fourth place are the original Skittles. These candies have been around for more than 35 years, and they are still just as are tasty. I prefer to mix flavor bites, but some Skittles lovers are adamant about eating one flavor at a time. No judgement here as long as you share. :-) Our Tear ‘N Share Skittles sizes are 2 for $3.

 

3. ROLO. A packet of chewy caramels covered in milk chocolate make any Halloween better. People were pretty stingy passing these out as a kid so I make sure to have them in the bucket nowadays. Love’s is at is again this month with ROLOs 2 for $1.75.

2. M&M’S Peanut Butter. Coming in at No. 2 are M&M’S Peanut Butter. They are just dangerous. If you’re looking to mix up the sweet-to-salty ratio, add the M&M's to a bowl of popcorn. BONUS: All standard size Mars candy are BOGO free!

1. Reese’s. Listen. You can’t go wrong with chocolate and peanut butter, which is why Reese’s takes my top spot for greatest Halloween candy. Well…unless you’re allergic to peanuts. Then avoid it, but that leaves more for Reese’s connoisseurs like myself. Melty or frozen, this perfect chocolate combo tastes heavenly either way. By the way, standard size Reese’s are 2 for $1.75 for October at all Love’s locations.

And now for a little bit of 'He Said' ...

Whether you trick or treat, trunk or treat or just fancy yourself a lover of sweets, Halloween is a glorious excuse for eating a lot of candy, and Americans buy it to the tune of billions of dollars.

However, candy can also be a polarizing issue. Candy lovers have very strong opinions about which candy rules and which candy drools, and there's no convincing anybody the errors of their ways. For example, I loves me some candy corn. Not only is it bright and colorful, it's relatively low-cal and fat-free, and I will not deviate from my passion for a big ol' handful of this tri-colored confection.

For the sake of peacekeeping, however, I'm leaving candy corn off my list of five favorite Halloween candies.

Coming in at No. 5 for me is a treat mistakenly believed to have been named after baseball legend Babe Ruth. This candy bar was also made comically infamous in the movie "Caddyshack." No shock, it's Baby Ruth, and it was named after the daughter of President Grover Cleveland.

I'm not that much of a caramel guy when it comes to candy, but Baby Ruth is the right mix of chocolate, caramel and nuts.

My fourth favorite Halloween candy is also manufactured by Nestlé, Butterfinger. It has a tendency to get all stuck up in your teeth, but the yummy hint of peanut butter interspersed in chocolate is totally worth the hours of flossing afterward. Butterfinger was a staple of my junior high years, practically a food group unto itself.

In third place is Snickers, made by Mars, Incorporated. Like Baby Ruth, Snickers is made up of nougat, caramel and peanuts. However, perhaps it was Snickers' long-time advertising campaigns that stuck with me, because Snickers was always my go-to candy bar for satisfying hunger pangs, a meat-and-potatoes candy selection if ever there was one.

Mars, Incorporated, also holds the No. 2 spot in my candy countdown with the sweet, sweet, really sweet 3 Musketeers bar. Its filling is light and fluffy and chocolaty and always satisfies my sweet tooth. When I need a sweet fix and a chocolate fix, my go-to is 3 Musketeers.

But if I need a sweet fix, a chocolate fix and a need for some crunch, I go to my Numero Uno, Kit Kat, made by The Hershey Company in the United States. I've never fancied myself a competitive eater, but I'd enter a Kit Kat-eating contest. What I like about Kit Kats is the combo of chocolate and crunch. Most of my cravings for candy fall into two categories: Just plain sweet and / or chocolate.

The crunch is a bonus, and it makes Kit Kat a true Halloween triple threat.
